The Opportunity

One Tech Engineering is searching for a Substation Procurement Manager for a position located in Bethel or Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Substation Procurement Manager will lead sourcing, bid solicitation, commercial evaluation, negotiation, purchase order issuance and delivery management for major equipment supporting substation projects.

The role supports utility, transmission, distribution and renewable energy programs while coordinating closely with engineering, construction, project management, suppliers, QA/QC and logistics teams.

Candidates should have five or more years of procurement or supply-chain experience supporting substation, utility, T&D, renewable energy or heavy industrial projects.

Position Overview

This role combines strategic sourcing, high-voltage equipment procurement, supplier negotiations, long-lead material management, logistics, commercial contract administration, FAT coordination and project cost control.

Substation Procurement Manager Responsibilities

  • Lead procurement activities for substation projects from sourcing through purchase order issuance.
  • Manage bid solicitation and commercial evaluation processes.
  • Procure power transformers, circuit breakers and disconnect switches.
  • Procure relay panels, protection systems and control houses.
  • Procure bus systems, conductors, steel structures and instrument transformers.
  • Procure cable, conduit, SCADA and communications equipment.
  • Develop procurement strategies aligned with project schedules and budgets.
  • Identify qualified suppliers and maintain productive vendor relationships.
  • Negotiate pricing, commercial terms, delivery schedules, warranties and service agreements.
  • Evaluate supplier performance related to cost, quality, lead time and responsiveness.
  • Manage supplier contracts, purchase orders, change orders and claims resolution.
  • Coordinate Factory Acceptance Testing schedules and supplier inspections.
  • Support legal and risk-management reviews of procurement agreements.
  • Coordinate closely with engineering, project management and construction teams.
  • Ensure equipment specifications and procurement requirements are clearly defined.
  • Track long-lead equipment and proactively mitigate supply-chain risk.
  • Coordinate logistics, expediting and project-site delivery schedules.
  • Support project forecasting, budgeting and cost controls.
  • Provide procurement status updates during project meetings.
  • Monitor market pricing, supplier capacity and supply-chain constraints.
  • Develop procurement schedules and maintain tracking reports.
  • Support inventory management and material planning.
  • Maintain procurement records including bids, contracts, submittals and vendor files.
  • Coordinate supplier quality requirements with QA/QC teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business or related field preferred.
  • Five or more years of procurement or supply-chain experience.
  • Experience supporting substations, utilities, transmission and distribution, renewable energy or heavy industrial projects.
  • Strong knowledge of high-voltage electrical equipment.
  • Strong understanding of utility procurement processes.
  • Experience managing large equipment packages and long-lead procurement.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical and vendor-management skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications.
  • Ability to review electrical equipment documentation.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems and procurement software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • EPC contractor or utility client experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of substation construction and commissioning is preferred.
  • Familiarity with major electrical OEMs is valuable.
  • CPM, CPSM or similar procurement certification is preferred.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder.
