Substation Construction Manager

One Tech Engineering is searching for a Substation Construction Manager supporting project locations in Hamburg, Arkansas; Shawboro, North Carolina; and Jackson, Ohio.

The Substation Construction Manager will oversee and direct day-to-day on-site construction activities for electrical substation projects.

The role includes field supervision, construction planning, outage coordination, safety leadership, schedule management, quality control, material coordination, cost tracking and support for testing, commissioning and energization.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens or green card holders and should have at least eight years of experience in electrical substation construction or transmission and distribution projects.

Substation Construction Manager Responsibilities

• Lead daily field construction activities for greenfield substations, brownfield projects, expansions and upgrades.
• Supervise site superintendents, foremen, subcontractors and craft labor.
• Develop construction work plans, sequencing strategies and manpower plans.
• Coordinate outage schedules and system tie-ins with utilities and system operators.
• Promote a zero-incident safety culture across project sites.
• Enforce site-specific safety plans, Job Hazard Analyses and company safety policies.
• Support compliance with OSHA, NESC, NFPA 70E and utility safety requirements.
• Conduct toolbox talks, safety audits and incident investigations.
• Drive adherence to project schedules and milestone dates.
• Monitor labor productivity and equipment utilization.
• Monitor availability of materials required for construction activities.
• Identify and mitigate construction risks and potential schedule impacts.
• Verify construction work aligns with approved drawings, specifications and standards.
• Coordinate inspections, testing and quality documentation.
• Resolve field conflicts, constructability issues and non-conforming work.
• Interface with engineering teams during constructability reviews.
• Coordinate and resolve Requests for Information.
• Coordinate deliveries of transformers, breakers, steel structures and control buildings.
• Support commissioning, testing and energization.
• Serve as a primary on-site representative for clients and utility personnel.
• Participate in project progress meetings.
• Provide field status updates to project stakeholders.
• Coordinate with Authorities Having Jurisdiction, inspectors and third-party engineers.
• Track field costs, labor hours and equipment usage.
• Support change management and time-and-material work.
• Maintain accurate daily construction reports.
• Assist with punch-list completion and project closeout.

Requirements

• Eight or more years of electrical substation construction or T&D project experience.
• Strong hands-on knowledge of substation construction means and methods.
• Proven leadership experience managing field crews and subcontractors.
• Strong knowledge of electrical safety practices.
• Experience working around energized electrical systems.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
• Willingness to travel extensively and work directly from project sites.
• Utility-scale substation experience is preferred.
• EPC substation project experience is preferred.
• Experience with high-voltage systems from 69kV to 500kV is preferred.
• Electrical trade background is considered beneficial.
• Construction Management education is considered beneficial.
• Familiarity with relay testing and protection and control systems is beneficial.
• Familiarity with commissioning processes is beneficial.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder.
