This is a field-based, non-remote position located near Neenah, Wisconsin. Extensive travel is required, potentially up to five days per week with overnight stays. Periodic on-call duty is also required.
The Opportunity

One Tech Engineering is looking for a Substation Technician for a position located near Neenah, Wisconsin.

The Substation Technician will service and test transformers, protective relays, breakers, switches and other electrical apparatus at utility substations and industrial facilities.

The role includes ground-grid testing, medium-voltage cable testing, control circuit troubleshooting, breaker and relay retrofits, transformer diagnostics and mechanical breaker repair.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens or green card holders. Sponsorship is not available, local candidates are preferred and the position is not remote.

Position Overview

This role combines high-voltage testing, substation equipment maintenance, protective relay work, breaker diagnostics, transformer testing, electrical troubleshooting, mechanical repair and extensive field travel.

Substation Technician Responsibilities

  • Perform ground-grid testing at utility substations.
  • Perform medium-voltage cable testing.
  • Troubleshoot control circuits and electrical control systems.
  • Test communication systems associated with substation equipment.
  • Troubleshoot protection systems and related electrical apparatus.
  • Perform breaker retrofits.
  • Perform protective relay retrofits.
  • Read electrical prints, schematics and drawings.
  • Interpret control and protection schemes.
  • Apply test procedures for relay test equipment.
  • Maintain strong substation awareness and safety consciousness.
  • Learn and apply testing procedures for different types of substation equipment.
  • Test low-voltage breakers.
  • Test medium-voltage breakers.
  • Perform Megger testing.
  • Perform Ductor testing.
  • Perform Hi-Pot testing.
  • Perform Hi-Current testing.
  • Perform breaker timing testing.
  • Conduct power-factor testing on power transformers.
  • Conduct transformer turns-ratio testing.
  • Perform transformer insulation-resistance testing.
  • Perform transformer winding-resistance testing.
  • Complete mechanical repairs on breakers.
  • Repair breaker wiring when required.
  • Replace breaker components and parts.
  • Perform supporting maintenance work including painting.
  • Use electrical meters accurately.
  • Read and plot electrical test curves.
  • Complete and submit field reports accurately and on time.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Electrical Power or Electrical Engineering.
  • Alternatively, five or more years of hands-on field experience.
  • Experience as a Switchgear or High Voltage Technician.
  • Proficiency with high-voltage test equipment.
  • Knowledge of low-voltage test equipment.
  • Knowledge of medium-voltage test equipment.
  • Ability to read electrical prints and protection schemes.
  • Strong computer and mobile-device skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on customer needs.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel extensively, potentially up to five days per week.
  • Ability to stay overnight while traveling.
  • Ability to participate in on-call duty approximately six times per year.
  • Ability to perform active physical field work.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend and stoop frequently.
  • Ability to crouch, climb and crawl as required.
  • Ability to work from ladders or scaffolding when necessary.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder.
