This is an on-site position in Kansas City, Missouri. Local candidates are preferred or candidates should be open to relocation. Job-site travel is approximately 30%.
The Opportunity

One Tech Engineering is searching for a Senior Automation & Controls Engineer for a position located in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Senior Automation & Controls Engineer will execute and lead automation and controls deliverables through front-end engineering, detailed design, construction and startup.

The position leads Automation & Controls Engineers, Specialists and Designers while coordinating with project management, electrical engineering, estimating, procurement and construction teams.

The role also includes PLC and HMI design, instrumentation, control panels, electrical design, vendor management, FAT, commissioning, client coordination, estimating and technical team development.

Position Overview

This senior engineering role combines PLC/HMI programming, industrial controls, instrumentation, SCADA, SIS, BMS, DCS, MES, control panel design, electrical systems, EPC execution, commissioning and technical leadership.

Senior Automation & Controls Engineer Responsibilities

  • Maintain compliance with company and project-site safety policies.
  • Lead the complete Automation & Controls design scope.
  • Lead Automation & Controls Engineers, Specialists and Designers.
  • Coordinate with project managers, electrical engineers and controls teams.
  • Coordinate with estimating, procurement and construction teams.
  • Lead PLC programming design deliverables.
  • Lead HMI programming design deliverables.
  • Support Batch and MES system design.
  • Support server and virtualization requirements.
  • Lead commissioning and startup of automation deliverables.
  • Prepare instrument and device lists.
  • Prepare I/O lists.
  • Develop controls narratives.
  • Lead control-panel and controls-hardware design.
  • Develop device-location plans and installation details.
  • Lead control-panel vendor specifications.
  • Lead equipment-vendor design requirements.
  • Manage vendor progression during project execution.
  • Lead Factory Acceptance Tests for controls equipment.
  • Develop electrical design for 480VAC and below systems.
  • Develop motor-power engineering requirements.
  • Prepare electrical installation plan drawings.
  • Develop conductor schedules.
  • Define instrumentation measurement protocols.
  • Support temperature, pressure and flow instrumentation.
  • Support level, analyzer and control-valve applications.
  • Select appropriate control technologies.
  • Review P&IDs.
  • Coordinate with process engineers to establish controls scope.
  • Develop and verify engineering calculations.
  • Coordinate project studies and reports.
  • Coordinate work with off-site design offices.
  • Track controls deliverables completed by external offices.
  • Lead quality reviews of project design submittals.
  • Apply applicable automation engineering codes and standards.
  • Coordinate directly with construction personnel.
  • Support development of construction contracts.
  • Develop project-phase engineering estimates.
  • Support project budgets and progress tracking.
  • Work directly with clients and vendors.
  • Develop lasting client relationships.
  • Support customer satisfaction goals.
  • Provide technical direction to controls team members.
  • Support resource allocation across active projects.
  • Resolve field installation issues.
  • Support field inspections and controls testing.
  • Lead technical startup and commissioning activities.
  • Develop discipline change notices.
  • Execute projects using an EPC delivery approach.
  • Visit job sites for surveys and installation support.
  • Support business-development project pursuits.
  • Attend and host client events.
  • Develop business strategies for future projects.
  • Develop engineering-hour estimates and proposals.
  • Support interviewing and hiring of new team members.
  • Coordinate workload with the Automation & Controls Department Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Controls Engineering.
  • Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering degrees may also qualify.
  • Related engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program may qualify.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
  • Seven years of electrical engineering experience.
  • Expert knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical equipment design.
  • Knowledge of ANSI and IEEE standards.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Experience leading discipline design on large projects.
  • Experience delegating technical work.
  • Ability to lead engineering execution.
  • Strong critical-thinking skills.
  • Strong quantitative problem-solving ability.
  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Experience performing engineering quality reviews.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card.
  • Professional Engineer license preferred.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder.

  • Local candidates preferred or open to relocation.
